The Consequences Of Under insuring

damaged_houseMany guess the rebuilding cost of their home or the value of their household possession and jewellery and they get it wrong.

A large proportion of households in Britain are under insured.

If there is a claim on the policy the insurance company may reduce the value of their settlement in line with the level of under-insurance. The table below shows what happens:

Policy Sum insured £30,000 Correct replacement value £60,000 Under-Insured by £30,000 = 50% approx

Burglary occurs, involving theft of household effects and jewellery

Total claim - £10,000

Insurers calculate payout on basis of under-insurance:

That is: (£30,000/£60,000) x £10,000 = £5,000 approx

To avoid this happening to you use our Replacement Cost Checklist.
